More Vinyl Stories
October 21st, 2008 § Leave a Comment
I’ve uploaded more vinyl stories on my Flickr Stream, digging in the crates for some classic funk, soul and brasilian albums, like the classic ‘Hustlers’ Convention’ by Lightnin’ Rod pictured above. I just wish burning the tracks from the vinyl was as quick, easy and fun as writing about them on Flickr…
Mashed 08 Pictures

I took my Mamiya C330 medium-format camera to Mashed08 earlier this summer (as I did last year), and have only just got around to getting the films developed. I didn’t take a lot, but got some nice pictures of people there, and also a sequence of Ant Miller with the rocket they let off on the Sunday afternoon.
The full set is on Flickr. Here’s a couple of favourites
Dconstruct Dinner

Friday was Dconstruct, the excellent social web conference that very handily happens just down the beach from where I live. Andy Budd and everyone at Clearleft did a great job, with some excellent speakers and organisation. Can’t wait for next year.
Better still, it meant a whole bunch of friends all being in one place at the same time, so I organised dinner at Santiago, my new favourite restaurant in Brighton. It started with 8, and ended up with about 30 people. Fantastic evening – some pictures are on my Flickr account

Opening the Crates

After over a year locked away in our garage, I’ve finally brought through my 14 odd crates of vinyl. Today was spent opening them up, picking out some gems, then lifting the rest up into the loft. Once we’ve converted the garage into a studio, they’ll all come out again, but until then, I’ve got vinyl in the house again, and all is good.
The first record I picked out is one I forgot I owned – Edu Lobo’s first album in the states, ‘presented by Sergio Mendes’. Mendes did this for a lot of his brasilian compatriots, using his crossover success in the States to bring through more obscure artists. It didn’t really work, and artists like Edu Lobo only recently gained an audience in the US and UK off the back of DJs interest in their work. This album contains the awesome acoustic guitar and drums monster ‘Zanzibar’.
I’m gradually uploading more pics of my favourite, or most bizarre albums, in this Flickr set
HackDay Pictures

I’ve got my HackDay London Medium Format scans back from the Lab, so they’re now on Flickr. As I was only there for the Sunday afternoon, I had to fire off a few rolls of colour and B&W really quickly. So I don’t think this is the best set of geek portraits I’ve taken, but there’s some nice pictures in there.
I’m at We Love Technology in a fortnight, and will have more time, as I’m there for a few days. I took a really nice set of pics at WLT last year so I’m looking forward to seeing Lisa and everyone again this year. If you’re going, come and say hi!, and please pose for a photo!
My Citizen Journalism moment with Brian Haw

Brian Haw is the protester who has camped out in Parliament Square, protesting against the occupation in Iraq. On the 23rd May 2006, the Metropolitan Police, under the orders of Sir Ian Blair, the Commissioner of the Met, confiscated all of the placards and objects from Haw’s demonstration.
Earlier today, I saw Haw outside Channel 4′s offices, as he’d just had a summons commissioned to Sir Ian Blair, asking him to turn up in Horseferry Rd Court before on July 27th to answer accusations of theft. We chatted for a while, and he said “Want an exclusive?” and posed for a photo with the summons letter. Here’s a photo of the letter (click to see larger, more readable version on Flickr). I guess this makes me a citizen journalist now…
The World’s Slowest PhotoBlog
December 7th, 2006 § Leave a Comment
This is probably the world’s slowest photoblog. On average, it takes me about two months to get films scanned and uploaded, so these one’s are almost instant in comparison. There’s a few selected photos from a couple of sets: my team’s leaving do for the outrageously talented Luciana Baptista; a few pictures of Carsten Holler’s Test Site at the Tate Modern (aka the slides!); and a few pictures of Lucerne taken whilst at the European Futurists Conference. Pictures from Picnic 06

In usual fashion, its taken me months to get around to dropping the films off at the Lab, and then get around to uploading them to Flickr. So here are the pictures I took of some speakers and friends at the fantastic Picnic 06 conference in Amsterdam this September.
The full set is on Flickr – here’s some favourites below.

Photos from We Love Technology
August 27th, 2006 § Leave a Comment
I took my medium format camera to the We Love Technology conference in Huddersfield this summer, and have finally got round to getting the flim scanned and uploading some of the pics. It was an odd location – on the campus of Huddersfield University – and there wasn’t much good light for portraits, but there was a spot in the area just outside the auditorium, so throughout the day I grabbed various people and dragged them to this little pool of light. I stood on a chair for most of them, but was still shooting upwards at most people, as my Mamiya has a waist-level finder. I’m 6 foot 1, but that’s not tall enough. Especially when shooting Dan Blackburn, who must be about 6 foot 6….
Here’s some of my favourites – the complete set is on Flickr. I’m at a couple more conferences this year, including Picnic06 in Amsterdam, so I should get time to take more pictures and stick them up here.
